European Schoolnet


European Schoolnet is the network of 31 European Ministries of Education, based in Brussels. As a not-for-profit organisation, our goal is to bring innovation in teaching and learning to its stakeholders: Ministries of Education, schools, teachers, researchers, and industry partners.

European Schoolnet provides both Ministries and schools with: information and services relating to the innovative use of educational technology; outreach campaigns on specific educational topics such as maths, science and technology; and research activities. European Schoolnet has been at the forefront of the campaign to reduce the skills gap in Europe, and to embed coding as part of the school curriculum; in addition to the European Coding Initiative, European Schoolnet has been involved in the eSkills for Jobs 2014 campaign, and the European Schoolnet Academy computer science MOOC for teachers.



Founded in 2004, Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what's going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.

Facebook has been backing computer science initiatives such as in the US and the UK with plans to roll it out across Europe. We believe that every single child should have the chance to learn to code so that it stimulates their curiosity and helps install them with a skillset that is much needed in today's digital world. Coding skills are essential for the engineering teams at Facebook but they are also increasingly in demand across other industries too – from media to insurance. If Europe wants to ensure it competes on the international stage then projects such as the European Coding Initiative will be crucial.

Within this strategy we recognise that learning to code is an important skill for the next generation and therefore we have committed our support to CoderDojo, a volunteer led coding club network.

We believe that our support will enable CoderDojo to reach many more young people, giving them the opportunity to learn coding and become the next generation of creators, greatly improving young people's career prospects.

We recognise that coding clubs can't tackle this challenge alone, thus collaboration from government, civil society and our industry peers is needed to engage young people in coding both at school through curriculum based learning and non-formal education such as after school coding clubs.

We feel we owe it to Europe's next generation to help equip them with the skills they will need to succeed in the jobs of tomorrow.
